Spotlight on Women’s Projects

Here at MyTenNights we are honoured to work with so many charities who continually support women’s projects in such a successful way. The sign of a strong and flourishing community is one where its women are thriving. And so by supporting these projects we can contribute and ensure women in need are taken care of in countries around the world.

“The best of you are those who are best to their women.” [Tirmidhi]

For this reason, we have shone the spotlight on some specific projects run by a few of our most-loved charities:

Islamic Relief

Since 1984 Islamic Relief has been one of the most prominent charities in the UK. They support projects worldwide and have saved and transformed the lives of over 120 million people. Causes for widows and orphans are often a priority for the charity; so much so that in 2019 they were named the winner of the prestigious Bond innovation Award, for their Alternative Livelihoods for Orphaned Families (ALO) programme based in Bangladesh. Orphaned children and widows living in extreme poverty in Bangladesh were assisted by the innovative ALO programme, which offered both education and protection for the children, as well as providing their guardians with funds, skills and business acumen they needed to make them self-sufficient within four years. Since then, Islamic Relief has continued to make families a priority and remains committed to supporting women through many of their emergency and zakat appeals.

Penny Appeal

Penny Appeal was set up in 2009 and has helped transform lives and empower communities around the world; helping to break the poverty cycle and build brighter futures. At the forefront of their continuous campaigns is, ‘Women’s Welfare’ which champions the rights of women and girls around the world. Amongst their aims are putting an end to discrimination, eliminating harmful practices, and promoting women’s equality. Any donations to this worthwhile cause could be earmarked for vocational or education training, safe spaces within refugee camps, mental health and domestic violence services etc.

Human Relief Foundation

Since its inception in 1991 HRF has been working on projects that relieve human suffering in some of the most deprived, as well as some affluent regions of the world. One project that the Foundation is most proud of, offers support to the Za’atari refugee camp on the Jordan- Syrian border. The camp is home to 77,497 refugees and as a result of the devastating war, nearly 30% of refugees are from female headed households. HRF is honoured to be working in collaboration with Vitamin Angels in order to provide support and assistance to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children living in one of the world’s largest refugee camps.

Save the Mothers Trust

This organisation’s name reflects their fundamental belief that a mother or a motherly figure is the core of every family. Their intention is to provide the correct support and assistance to mothers and improve life for them and their future generations. One of their primary aims is to construct small maternity wards in South East Asian and African villages where women and children regularly die, due to the lack of skilled midwives being present at the time of delivery. In addition, they assist with education programmes and practical skills such as sewing, to enable women to progress in their path to self-sufficiency.

Look out for the charities highlighted above next Ramadan as part of our MyTenNights campaign.
